"It was a joy sharing the ethos of the Boon Lay Nature Garden at Jurong Central Park with friends from Fitree - a ground-up group serving the Singapore Muslim community to return to our fitrah (natural state) as true khalifah fil ardh (Stewards of the Earth).

It was during the Ramadan and our Muslim friends were fasting. I am impressed by their energy and enthusiastic participation under the hot sun. In the practice of fasting, we let go of our material attachments, including food, and learn to appreciate what is given to us by Nature.

Joining in the reflections after the garden talk and tour, I am moved by the participants sharings and learnings from the Quran. In particular, this verse on giving thanks resonates with the garden's ethos of gratitude and reciprocity of the gifts of life that the garden bestow upon us." 💚

From Farm to Fork to Table is a 3-part panel series that aims to contextualise conversations on Singapore’s food future, spanning local farming practices, our rich culinary heritage, and recent food policies. The panel will draw on the expertise of farmers, food writers, researchers and policy enthusiasts to provide a nuanced and holistic perspective of Singapore’s foodscape.

Jointly organized by culinary anthropologist Nithiya Laila and undergraduate students from the Yale-NUS Farming Collective @yalenusfarm Roosevelt Network @ Yale-NUS, the series will be happening on 20th, 22nd and 24th July 2021 from 8 - 9.30PM.

Food scraps collected from the nearby market and other locations. To be used in making compost at the field to regenerate soil and start co-creating gardens, forests and more with an international school community, with a mid- to longer term goal of involving local community in gardening, well-being activities and more.

Remember the post of a banana plant on the move?

The banana plant had been transplanted in a former school field, where contributors of Foodscape Collective ecosystem has the opportunity to transform into a biodiversity edible garden, tiny forest, meadow and more...

This banana circle was created in the last few weeks. Food scrap from nearby market and fruit stores were buried in the ground to improve the soil condition. Dried leaves collected in the field and surrounding areas were used to mulch the soil.

Updates from the field - A new community compost p

Updates from the field -
A new community compost pile being created. It has such a nice fragrance. Branches have just been cut into chips, thanks to a demo shredding service by a gardening equipment company. The fruit peels are from 3 different stores at the nearby market. The saw dust are from a furniture company that turns Singapore trees into beautiful furniture.

Shout-out to @projectblackgold.sg team for bringing food scrap composting to neighbourhoods in Singapore. After kick-starting in-person compost making sessions at a condo in July, the team is now actively guiding enthusiastic participants to make compost at a national park.

Town Hall to propose an NMP representing green issues

The nomination process for Nominated Members of Parliament [NMPs] has begun. Having an NMP that represents environmental issues would help hugely in pushing for greener policies. Although we can’t guarantee that our proposed candidate(s) will be nominated we have previously had NMPs representing green groups in the past, including Dr Geh Min and Ms Faizah Jamal from the Nature Society.

We are organizing a town hall at 6pm on Sun, 15 Nov over Zoom to discuss who can best represent environmental issues as an NMP candidate, and how we can rally around them (the nomination deadline is 23 Nov 2020, 4.30pm).

How did you celebrate National Day? We celebrated

How did you celebrate National Day? We celebrated by doing a food version of “National Service” 😜!

Which meant we spent the morning working on a farm in Kranji (@greencirclefarm and that’s Evelyn the farmer👆🏼); and then sat down to a scrumptious lunch of nasi ulam (can we just say this should also be a national dish!!) cooked right there in the farm shed. All the herbs, greens and flowers are from this region, and harvested minutes before the meal.

It’s a veritable #sgfoodstory from farm to plate, and if you think we are sounding extremely proud and joyous about our very local day, you are right!

Happy birthday, Singapore! May our farmland always be fertile, our food locally abundant and our communities connected! 🙌🏼❤️🌱

(In case you’re curious about what we did on the farm - we pruned a copse of overgrown mulberry trees, and relieved a pond of loads of water hyacinth, which is being turned into compost. There can never be too much compost on a farm; it’s a case of more is more!)

Nithiya @brunchbandits65 joins Vivian Lee (core team member of Foodscape Collective) for a casual chat that explores the themes of food security and sustainability through the lens of native plants and food sovereignty.

Short bio of guest:
Culinary Anthropologist Nithiya Laila comes from a long line of farmers who reaped the fruits of land for both nourishment and healing. Her philosophy on sustainability and conscious consumption informs her approach to food. She works with farmers in Singapore to celebrate the intersection of heritage and environment at social dining sessions and the farmer markets that she runs. The sessions that Nithiya curates explore culture through the lens of a global citizen. Nithiya is interested in the stories these dishes carry, and she believes that caring for your food starts with discovering natural edible landscapes, food flavours and dedication of people. Nithiya is television host of Edible Wild.

These stingless bees know how to make a shelter and tavern fit for their queen! 🧹🚰 🍻 With a bit of synchronicity, maybe we will find the natural glue to hold our new social structures, and shape them for the new world that’s forming. clinking glasses to your good health, sending sun, water & earth your way as we come out of this new moon 🌒 growing from introspection to awareness & integration 🎈🧲💓
